Broken bones are not mandatory in this subscription of life, but, sometimes, it is one of those things you stumble into. Fortunately, I have only managed to complete the trial version of a broken bone; the sprain. Rolled ankles, jammed fingers, and a sprained knee has been the extent of my “fun” with injuries. Lots of bumps and bruises serve as reminders that I am indeed a living person, but a broken bone has not been a necessary experience this time around.
I wholeheartedly believe that I have been able to avoid breaking anything simply by listening to my body. I do that by focusing on the most basic movement needed to complete required motion. To elaborate, say I hit the gym. Bench press. we get it. chest exercise. grip the bar, up, down, up, re-rack. Nothing major. Within those moves, however, I am constantly asking my body multiple questions. “How’s this weight? Can you do ten reps? Are you using more arm than chest?” The list goes on. By asking those questions and paying attention to my body’s immediate feedback, I have been able to build a formidable structure. Solid as I may be, I run with the notion that some muscle will prevent broken bones. I imagine rebuilding muscle fibers is a lot easier than rebuilding bone tissue so I figure it is an easy decision.
